May is considered as the month of the flowers in Cyprus. In all coastal towns flower festivals are organised every year in May to celebrate this season, an event which has it's roots in the festivities organised centuries ago in honour of the goddes of love and beauty Aphrodite and her handome lover Adonis! During spring festivals for Aphrodite and Adonis, separate processions of garlanded men and women walked along the Sacred Way from Nea Paphos to the shrine of Aphrodite at Palea Paphos, where there were games and contests of music and poetry. This tradition survives in the modern spring flower festival, Anthestiria, which is especially popular in Ktima Pafos.
In Pafos the Flower festival is organised on the 24th of this month in small stadium in the town centre. . It includes a colourfull parade of children dressed in costumes , flower floats with and traditional dances!
